One
of the verticals where Storwize technology has a tremendous
impact on is the Oil and Gas industry where compression
ratios have reached as high as 70%
In
a recent article published at the Oil IT Journal (www.oilit.com)
on June 2006, the impressive compression available by
the implementation of Storwize in Oil and Gas companies
was quoted. |

Storwize
seismic compression benchmarks (June 2006) Contrary to received
views, seismic data does compress without loss, by as much
as 60-70%.
Storwize has been trialing its data compression appliance
with two unnamed oil and gas accounts to determine the feasibility
of lossless seismic data compression. Tests ran on a NetApp
FAS980C/980 network attached storage (NAS) array over a Gigabit
network. The results, according to Storwize, demonstrated
storage savings of 60-70% and a corresponding reduction in
NAS CPU use.
Performance
- Processing from the compressed datasets was not penalized
by the compression. In fact bandwidth actually improved slightly,
benefiting from servers’ parallelism. Best results were
obtained with larger file sizes.
But even for small files with low compression, process duration
was little changed. The Storwize appliance remained transparent
to both client application and storage systems. According to
Storwiz, the technology should allow companies to save on storage
resources or streamline processing by pulling seismic data from
tape to disk.
